SC Legislative Black Caucus Statement on the SCOTUS Decision on Affirmative Action

July 10, 2023

Charleston, South Carolina - The South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus expresses profound disappointment in the recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that bars affirmative action in college admissions. This decision is not just a setback for affirmative action but a troublesome impediment to the very essence of the American Dream.

The ruling by the Supreme Court stands to keep a significant number of minority students in our country from achieving their full potential and realizing the American Dream. Although not perfect in its application, the decision to bar affirmative action is a gross misstep. Affirmative action has been a powerful instrument for creating a more equitable society, promoting diversity and inclusivity, broadening perspectives, and fostering a greater understanding among people from all walks of life.

The foundations of our great nation are rooted in the principles of equality and justice for all. This decision directly opposes these principles, and it is concerning to see the highest court in our land make a decision that could potentially limit the opportunities for a significant portion of our population.

Now is the time for all proponents of diversity and inclusion to unite. We must use our collective voices, especially in the coming elections, to advocate for policies that uphold the ideals of fairness and equality. Our democracy thrives when all voices are heard, and all individuals are given equal opportunities to succeed.

We stand by the NAACP President Derrick Johnson's comments, "The worst thing about Affirmative Action is that it created a Clarence Thomas."

In the face of this disheartening ruling, the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus is even more committed to championing the rights of all minorities. We will continue to fight for an America where everyone, regardless of their racial or ethnic background, has an equal shot at achieving the American Dream.
