American Landmark Apartments Selects Local Visual Artist As “Artist in Residence”

June 26, 2023

American Landmark Apartments, one of the fastest-growing multifamily owner-operators in the country, has named Alexandria Searles as the first Artist in Residence at one of its South Carolina properties. The program, now entering its fourth year, provides no-cost housing and studio space for up to one year for select artists. In return, grant recipients are asked to implement on-site community art events and educational programs, including classes for adults and children.

Searles, also known as Morowa Mosai, began her residency at American Landmark’s “Elevate at Brighton Park” Summerville apartment community late last year. Since beginning her residency, she has brought her unique artistic expression to the community, using her platform to share her Afrocentric and feminine styles through classes based on contemporary painting, jewelry making, coaster creation and DIY projects for home décor.

“The visual arts allow me to express myself,” said Searles. “My art is a physical window to my soul. I am blessed to be able to use this gift to inspire, advocate, and promote diversity across racial and cultural divides.”

Searles is a visual artist and graphic designer whose exudes creativity in every aspect of her life, from personal style to her paintings, illustrations and mural designs. Her classes empower residents to tap into their inner artist and provide them with an outlet to express themselves in ways that may seem foreign or challenging. The collaborative and interactive setting enables attendees to embrace their own individuality while discovering commonalities they may share with others from different backgrounds.

The artist aims to nurture an inclusive and empowering community, incorporating her artistic expertise with her enthusiasm to create an uplifting environment that celebrates the bridge that art builds.

“Alexandria is a fantastic example of someone who makes the most of an opportunity,” said Rachel Lubeck, the founder of the Artist in Residence program. “She has graciously accepted this grant and ran with it in a way that has been inspiring to watch unfold. This has been a clear example of how this program works to provide practical pathways for the arts to thrive, and to give artists a platform to share their gifts, which truly enriches the community.”

Former artists in residence include Sheherazade Thenard (Orlando, 2022), Brian B.V. Cooper (Tampa, 2022) Calder Kamin (Fort Worth, 2021), Rose Dunseth (Plantation, 2021), Jacoub Reyes (Plantation, 2022), Austin “Slim” Gee (Tampa, 2021) and Artem Mirolevich (Plantation, 2020)

From visual to culinary arts, there are openings available throughout the country for artists to share their passions and foster connection in their communities. Artists interested in being a part of the Artist in Residence program can apply at artistsalapts.com.
