Charleston International Airport Partners with the Tri-County Human Trafficking Taskforce for Human Trafficking Awareness Campaign

CHARLESTON, SC—On Wednesday, 1/11/23, the Charleston County Aviation Authority, in partnership with the Tri-County Human Trafficking Taskforce (THTTF), will unveil its Human Trafficking Awareness Campaign at the Charleston International Airport (CHS) to bring awareness of the dangers of human trafficking in the travel & tourism industry.

CHS will place educational messages on digital monitors throughout the airport, highlighting statistics along with the hashtag #SCTheSigns to encourage travelers to join the conversation on human trafficking in the tri-county area on social media.

In addition to the public signage, CHS will also place signage in all airport restrooms with bilingual messaging encouraging victims to reach out if they are not safe. The signage includes the National Human Trafficking Hotline phone number and a number that accepts SMS messaging. Worldwide, more than 20 million people are held captive and trafficked annually. It is estimated that 71% of human trafficking victims arrive in the U.S. via airplane.

“Our priority is safety here at CHS. So, if you see something, say something,” said Elliott Summey, airport CEO and executive director. “We are committed to doing our part in stopping human trafficking and ensuring that traffickers face justice for the crimes against their victims.”
