Louis Callaway

October 1, 1944 - November 27, 2022

Deacon Louis Callaway was born on October 1, 1944 to the late LeMar and Loretta Hopkins Callaway. He is the third child of sixteen children born to this union. At the age of 78, in the early evening of November 27, 2022, Louis passed to his Heavenly Reward at his home in Clermont, Florida surrounded by his loving wife, Florence and family. He was a strong and determined man and a man of great unwavering conviction and faith. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. One of his favorite phrases was, "Don't worry about it, everything is going to be alright." He was joined in matrimony to the beautiful and lovely Florence Neals Coleman of Freeport, New York on February 3, 2021. Although their union together was short, their love and commitment to each other meant the world to him. At the point that they met, she was a God-sent angel. She cared for "Louie" with such love and compassion until his last breath.

He accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at an early age and attended Brown Chapel Fire Baptized Holiness Church in Hudsontown Community, St. George, SC. Louis was rooted in God's Word and carried Him every step of his life. He participated on several prayer lines and sharing his love for God with others. He was a member of Greater Allen A.M.E. Church since 1984. Louis was active in politics and worked diligently on the Congressional Campaign and re-election campaigns of his pastor, Reverend Dr. Floyd H. Flake. He was also a faithful supporter and an active deacon of Greater Mount Calvary C.O.G.I.C. where Bishop Robert Washington and Elder Darryl Harris are the founding pastors.

After graduating from Williams Memorial Memorial High School in St. George, South Carolina, Louis moved to New York. In 1965, he met and married his beloved late wife, Mattie Williams Callaway. The Lord blessed them with two daughters, Sharron Louise and Michelle Camille. In August 1986, Louis married his beloved late wife, Cedelle Winningham Callaway. He worked at Ideal Toy Company when he first arrive in New York. Louis loved being active, helping people, and entertained the idea of becoming a police officer after he was married. He worked as an orderly in Deepdale Hospital for a short period while attending classes at Allen School Allied Health, where he received his certification in Histology.

While working as a licensed laboratory technician, he soon discovered that transporting lab specimens, medical, dental and optical supplies gave him the freedom and enjoyment he desired. Louis left the lab and began his career as a driver/deliverer with Route Messenger Service of Long Island City. Louis worked nearly 40 years for RMS until his retirement in 2005. He enjoyed driving and traveling the streets of Manhattan while visiting offices and delivering medical supplies, always with that charismatic Callaway smile. Louis began the makings of the Local 804 Credit Union at his kitchen table in 1974, tabulating deposits and reconciling loan payments in the black marble notebook. At the close of that project, he remained an active member of his union, even acting as Shop Steward for a term term. In 1975, he took a short sabbatical from work to start and assist in the daily operations of "Callaway's Restaurant, Home Cooking Like Mama's."

Deacon Louis was preceded in death by his beloved parents, two wives, Mattie Williams Callaway of 18 years and Cedelle Callaway of 32 years; four brothers, Richard Callaway, Charles Callaway, Arthur Callaway, and Herman; one sister, Betty "Sylvia" Jean Wright and brother-in-law Sam Wright; and one nephew, Nathaniel T. Cole Callaway.

He leaves to treasure his fond memories: a devoted wife, Florence Neals Coleman Callaway; two loving daughters, Sharron (Aaron) Williams of South Orange, New Jersey, and Dr. Michelle (Darryl) Carpenter of Amityville, New York; eight grandchildren, Michael Aaron (Maya) Williams of Owings Mills, Maryland, Dr. Elyce Dominique (Dr. Savion) Johnson of Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, Darryl Carpenter, Jr. (DJ) of East Orange New Jersey, Darielle Carpenter of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Gabriel Azariah Williams of Jamaica, New York, Martha Elana (Tyrel) Powell of Upper Marboro, Maryland, Davon Carpenter of Amityville, New York, and Daron Carpenter of Amityville, New York; one great grandson Elijah Williams, one great granddaughter Elaine Williams; two stepsons, Keith Sprinkle and Tony Sprinkle which include nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren, seven brothers, William of St. George, SC, Roscoe (Drucilla) of Chesapeake, VA, Marvin of Atlanta, GA, Nathaniel of St. George, SC, Timothy of Glen Arden, MD, Delmar (Charlotte) of Summerville, SC and LeMar, Jr. (Rose) of Virginia Beach, VA; and three sisters, Carolyn (Freddie) Breaker of St. George, SC, Eyvonne (Darrell) Hart of Statesboro, GA and Eyvette (Michael) Jonson of Hermitage, TN; two sisters-in-law, Delores Callaway Daniels of Randallstown, MD and Dorothy Callaway of Brooklyn, NY; one aunt, Samella Odom of St. George, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and close friends.
